The Overage Question Nobody Warns You About
Most guides say "order 10% extra." What they don't tell you: stone slabs are not manufactured to exact repeat patterns. If you need to reorder, you'll get a different batch with slightly different veining — and it will never match.
For quartz with a directional pattern (like Calacatta Gold or Statuario), template installers need to book-match veining across seams. This wastes 15–20% of the slab even before cuts. Some dramatic vein patterns waste 30%+.
Rule: get your fabricator's specific waste estimate before ordering, not after. A good fabricator will draw the layout on the slab diagram before cutting.
Quartz vs. Granite: The Cost Surprise in 2025
Ten years ago, granite was cheaper than quartz. That's reversed in many markets. Entry-level granite (think Venetian Gold or Santa Cecilia) runs $40–$60/sqft installed. Entry-level quartz (Silestone Blanco, MSI White) runs $50–$70/sqft.

How much countertop overage should I order?
Order 10% extra for simple galley-style kitchens with one or two straight runs. Order 15% for L-shaped kitchens. Order 20–25% if your layout has diagonal cuts, a large island with a waterfall edge, or patterned stone where you need to match veining. Unlike tile, slab countertops can't be reordered with a matching pattern — always order enough the first time.
What is the standard countertop depth?
